Language requirements

We require all applicants to demonstrate competence in the English language before they begin their proposed course of study.

For students who hold a UK passport or are from the UK

All students from the UK should hold at a minimum a GCSE English Language qualification at Grade C or above.

For students who live outside of the UK and do not hold a uk passport

To meet requirements for a Student Visa to study here, you need to take the UKVI IELTS Academic or alternative or alternative Secure English Language Test (SELT) – visit the gov.uk website for full details (opens in new window/tab).

You need to achieve a 6.5 overall with a minimum of a 5.5 for each component: reading, writing, listening and speaking. This is equivalent to a CEFR (Common European Framework of References for Language) B2 level. Other SELT have different scoring methods, but you must achieve a result which is equivalent to CEFR B2 level.

Are there any exceptions to this requirement?

Do you accept the International Baccalaureate in place of an A Level in English Language as proof of English Language Proficiency?
No. The UKVI will only accept a GCSE, A Level, Scottish National Qualification at level 4 or 5 or, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher, in English (language or literature), that was awarded at a UK based school which began while you were aged under 18. please contact admissions@dartington.org for further information.

How long is my test certificate valid for?
Test results are valid for 2 years.

When should I book my test?
Book a test as soon as you make an application to one of our courses. UKVI IELTS test sites can become very busy and it may be difficult to find a convenient date and location.
