Scholarships

Two scholarships of £1,000 each are available to students at Dartington every year, thanks to the generosity of Martin Stanley.

To apply for the Martin Stanley Scholarship, applicants must apply as a full-time MA or MSc student on one of our programmes starting in September. Scholarship applicants are also able to apply for a bursary at the same time.

The decision will be based on the applicant’s commitment to making a real, meaningful impact in the world by studying with us. Specifically the factors will include:

• what is deemed by the programme coordinator as the highest scoring response against the marking criteria
• the course application form
• a successful interview
• evidence the individual can cover the remaining costs

Your statement should be no longer than 300 words and submitted alongside or preceding your application to study at Schumacher College. Please answer the following question:

In recognition that underrepresented students face greater obstacles to educational achievement – Dartington are partnering with Hospital Rooms to provide an award that provides financial support and professional development to one student joining the programme in April 2023.

• a tuition fee reduction of £6000 to study on MA Arts & Place – the residency based fine-arts programme at Dartington, Devon
• an artist residency with Hospital Rooms

To be eligible for the scholarship, we are inviting applications from students:

• from an underrepresented background (from a black and minority ethnic group or low socio-economic group-definitions below)*
• who have a disability as defined in the Equality Act 2010
• who have a personal annual income of not more than £20,000 or are in receipt of a qualifying benefit

For the purposes of this scholarship opportunity, this is defined as Arab; Asian or Asian British; Black or

Black British; Chinese; Gypsy or Traveller; Irish Traveller; Mixed White and Asian;

Mixed White and Black African; Mixed White and Black Caribbean; Other Asian

background; Other Black background; Other Ethnic background; Other Mixed

background; and Other White background.

* Low socio-economic group

You come from one of the most deprived areas of the country as defined by the government’s IMD (Indices of Multiple Deprivation) database.

You come from an area where it is unusual for people to go to university (as defined by the government’s classification called Polar 3).

You were in receipt of a Maintenance Grant as an undergraduate.

In addition, prospective students should be:

• ordinarily resident in the UK and eligible for a UK fee
• a practising artist (visual arts, performance, writing, film making, sound) with a first or send class degree in an arts subject
• academically motivated by this programme

If your first language is not English, you may need to provide evidence of your English language ability.

Dartington Learning awards one scholarship for each full-time master’s programme to cover a percentage of tuition fees.
